Year 6 Term 2i - Unstressed vowels and consonants in polysyllabic words

This unit revises and extends work on spelling patterns for unstressed vowels and consonants.


  • Unstressed vowels and consonants introduction: Introduces the unit with words containing unstressed vowels, and explains why it is often difficult to spell these types of words. It ends with a Quick Write activity.
  • Spelling strategies: Explains and gives examples of all the different spelling strategies that are useful for learning how to spell words with unstressed vowels and consonants.
  • Unstressed vowels: Shows examples of using different spelling strategies to spell poisonous, parliament, and definite, and revises the Look say cover, write check strategy for learning words.
  • Word families: Explains and gives examples of how knowledge of word families can be useful in spelling words with unstressed vowels and consonants.
  • Days and months: Looks at the etymology of January, February, April, August, September, October, November, and December, plus the days of the week, as an aid to spelling.
  • Unstressed consonants: Shows examples of using different spelling strategies to spell scissors, cupboard, and handkerchief.


  • Word families x 5: Each sheet contains three different words, with spaces to write words from the same family.
  • Unstressed consonants worksheet x 2: Both contain 7 words for the children to learn.

Each worksheet below contains 10 words, with spaces for the children to write what strategy they will use to remember how to spell the words:

  • Unstressed vowel combinations x2
  • Unstressed vowels - 'a'
  • Unstressed vowels -able and ally
  • Unstressed vowels - ar
  • Unstressed vowels - 'e' x 2
  • Unstressed vowels - words containing 'en'
  • Unstressed vowels - words containing 'er' x 2
  • Unstressed vowels - 'i'
  • Unstressed vowels - 'o' x 2
  • Look, write, cover, check sheet: To support learning of the words.
  • Spelling strategies recording sheet: For individual words.
