Year 5 Term 3 ii - KS2 spelling resources - word roots, derivations, and spelling patterns

Teaching and learning activities on word structure, word families, and word histories to extend vocabulary, and develop spelling skills.


  • Recap of affixes: A look at all the prefixes and suffixes covered in previous years, with their meanings
  • Roots and affixes matrices: Matrices containing the root words take, appear, pack, press, and prove; with prefixes and  suffixes to add to them. The children are then challenged to think of words containing 'child', with a word list to show at the end.
  • All about words: A look at how words have developed over time, and different ways in which they are made.
  • Root words and derivations: Looks at act and light, with different affixes added to make lists of words.
  • Latin roots: A look at history, and how Latin words came to be used in the English language. Gives examples of 'prim' and 'mob', with their meanings and words containing them.
  • Latin word root revision: Recap of Latin root words and their meanings.

The Word derivation worksheets contain a matrix of prefixes, root word and suffixes, with space for the children to write the words they make:

The Root meanings worksheets contain the root word, and a space for the children to write down the meaning, and a list of words:

The Root words worksheets contain three words, with space to write the meaning and words containing the root:

  •     Root words A - electric, assist, prove

  •     Root words C - hero, claim, public

The Root word and meanings worksheets contain a list of words. The children have to work out what the root word is, and its meaning:

  •     Root word and meanings 1: act, claim, electric
  •     Root word and meanings 2: joy, light, medic
  •     Root word and meanings 3: assist, cover, prison
  •     Root word and meanings 4: public, prove, hero


  •     Derivations of ACT
  •     Derivations of GIVE
  •     Derivations of LIGHT
  •     Derivations of PASS
  •     Derivations of PRESS
  •     Derivations of SIGN
  •     Latin number prefixes: Words containing number prefixes 1-10.
  •     Word sorting sheet - Root words: Can be used to sort out the word cards into root words
  •     Word sorting sheet - word class: Can be used to sort the word cards into nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs.

The jigsaw cards contain a range of root words, with prefixes and suffixes, to fit the cards together and build new words:
