Year 4 Term 3i resources - Apostrophe and contractions

This pack contains a mix of IWB and printable activities to teach about the use of the apostrophe in contracted forms of words.

  • Introduction to contractions: Shows newspaper headlines containing contractions, and asks why the apostrophes are there. It then explains what contractions are, and shows seven long forms, and how they are made into contractions. It ends with a quiz where the children have to think of the long form of different contractions.
  • Changing contractions to the full form: Shows 17 common contractions for the children to change to the full form. Each contraction is animated, showing which letters the apostrophe is in place of, to show the full form of the word.
  • Its or it's: Explains the common mix up between its and it's, and how to remember which one to use. It has 15 sentences for the children to read, where 'its' or 'it's' is hidden. The children can use their show me cards to decide which one is right.
  • Your or you're: As above, but with your and you're.
  • Making contractions: Twenty long forms of contractions for the children to make into contractions. The changes are animated for the children to better visualise how they are formed.
