Resources to consolidate earlier learning of compound words, suffixes and prefixes, through looking at syllables in words to help spelling.


  • Introduction to syllables: Explains what a syllable is, with examples of one, two, and three syllable words.
  • Counting syllables in words: Gives 20 words for counting syllables.
  • Writing syllables in words: Gives 20 words for writing syllables. The answer is shown with the syllables in different colours.
  • Prefix, suffix, present and past recap: Quick revision
  • Spelling long words: Identifies the four strategies that children can use for spelling words: syllables, suffixes and prefixes, grapheme-phoneme correspondence, and past tense ending.


  • 'Dis' word cards: 18 words with the prefix 'dis'
  • 'Un' word cards: 18 words with the prefix 'un'
  • 2 syllable words: 30 words
  • 3 syllable words: 30 words
  • 4 syllable words: 18 words
    All the cards above can be used for sorting into different categories (e.g. number of syllables / prefix types / suffix types / long vowels / short vowels etc.)
  • Jigsaw cards: Consists of suffixes, prefixes and base words for the children to put together and make words.
  • Clap and count word cards: 42 different words for the clap and count game.


  • Create a word: For the children to make up their own words and write a definition.


  • Year 3 Term 3ii planning: An outline of the unit in word, showing where each resource fits in.
