A set of resources to teach the Year 6 VGP objectives in Appendix 2 of the English curriculum.

WORD: Formal and informal vocabulary

  • Formal and informal vocabulary: Begins with an explanation of formal and informal vocabulary and when each should be used. It then gives examples of informal words and corresponding formal words. Ends with two activities - thinking of appropriate formal/informal words.

WORD: Synonyms and antonyms

  • The history of the English language: A history, plus an explanation of why the English language has so many synonyms.
  • Synonyms: Explains what they are and gives 11 words with related synonyms.
  • Antonyms: Explains what they are and gives 12 words with corresponding antonyms, plus 7 words with several antonyms.
  • Antonyms and prefixes beginning with 'i': Formation of antonyms by adding im, in or il to words.
  • Antonyms and prefixes recap: Activity to make words by adding a range of prefixes covered in previous years, to make antonyms.

  • Antonyms worksheet: re-write the sentences to make it mean the opposite

SENTENCE: Passive sentences

  • Passive sentences: Explanation of active and passive sentences and how to arrange an active sentence to make it passive. Explains how and when passive sentences can be used


  • Passive sentences worksheet: Change the active sentences into passive sentences

SENTENCE: Informal and formal writing

  • Informal and formal writing: Explains how to change writing styles/register according to audience, purpose and text, and what tone to use for each. Shows examples of similar sentence written in a formal and an informal style. Ends with an activity where the children have to turn an informal sentence into a formal one.

TEXT: Cohesive devices across paragraphs

  • Cohesive devises: Looks at and explains cohesive devices such as synonyms; pronouns; verb tenses; repetition of a phrase; adverbials and ellipses


  • Cohesive devices display: For reference - it contains all the terminology above.

TEXT: Layout devices

  • Layout devices: Explains different layout devices - for example, headings, sub-headings, columns, bullets, or tables, to structure text]

PUNCTUATION: Semi-colon, colon and dash; colons and semi-colons for lists; bullet points; hyphens

  • Y6 Punctuation: Explains how to use semi-colons, colons and dashes to join two independent clauses; Colons and semi-colons in lists; bullet points and hyphens to avoid ambiguity.


  • Y6 Terminology: Describes and explains: subject, object, active, passive, synonym, antonym, ellipsis, hypen, colon, semi-colon and bullet points
