Y3 PLANTS KS2 Science topic resources

A set of resources to teach Plants in Y3, following the 2014 curriculum objectives.


  • ROOTS: Explains what plants are and that they generally consist of different basic parts. Explains what the roots are, their three main functions, and takes a close up look at them. Explains how plants need support which increases as they get larger and taller, then looks at different types of roots.
  • THE STEM AND TRUNK: Explains the different types of stem / trunk and their main functions. Shows images of how stems grow and develop, and how they are able to transport nutrients and water through them. Looks at different types of stems and stems that we eat.
  • LEAVES: Explains what leaves are, and their main function to make food for the plant, with detailed images. Shows examples of leaves that we eat.
  • FLOWERS: Takes a close look at flowers and the part they play in reproduction, showing the main parts of a flower with labels and explanations. Shows the life cycle of a plant in diagrams and pictures. It explains the different ways in which seeds are dispersed, and what happens each year when plants die.
  • REQUIREMENTS FOR LIFE AND GROWTH: A look at firstly the requirements of a germinating seed and how its needs change as it grows and develops. It looks at each requirement; air, light, water, nutrients and space to grow. It asks if the children can think of any ways to test these requirements.
