These IWB resources cover the spelling guidelines on page 187 of the Letters and Sounds document.

INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARD RESOURCES (POWERPOINT)

  • Using ai or ay: Looks at the different postitions that the phonemes appear in words. It shows a selection of words for the children to learn.
  • Using oy or oi rules: Looks at the different postitions that the phonemes appear in words. It shows a selection of words for the children to learn.
  • The 'w' special, plus 'qu': Looks at words where an /o/ sound follows a /w/ sound, such as was, wallet, want, and quarrel, quantity etc. with two quick write activities at the end.
  • When or follows w: Words that contain the phonemes /w/ /ur/ - e.g. word, worm, work. There is an activity at the end for the children to look at the words before they disappear, and then check them at the end.
  • The 'or' sound as al: Words that have an /or/ phoneme before /l/ - e.g. ball, call, always. There is an activity at the end for the children to look at the words before they disappear, and then check them at the end.
  • V at the end of a word: Explains how English words do not end in 'v'. Gives some examples of words, and an activity at the end for the children to look at the words before they disappear, and then check them.
  • Contractions: A quick look at common contractions, and how they are formed.
  • There and their: Points out the differences, and strategies for remembering which one to use.
  • ie and ei words: Lists the most common words for the children to read and remember, with a passage to read at the end.
  •  Ways of remembering difficult spellings: Mnemonics to remember the spellings of: could, because, rhythm, queue, people, said, friend, Wednesday, together and hear.
