Year 1 Division of words into syllables and Compound words

Spelling resources to teach the statutory requirements in Appendix 1 of the English curriculum:

  • Each syllable is like a ‘beat’ in the spoken word. Words of more than one syllable often have an unstressed syllable in which the vowel sound is unclear
  • Compound words are two words joined together. Each part of the longer word is spelt as it would be if it were on its own.

DIVISION OF WORDS INTO SYLLABLES

POWERPOINT RESOURCES:

  • Introduction to syllables: An explanation of what syllables are and how to identify them in words. It gives several examples of words with more than one syllable with opportunities for children to spell them.
  • Syllable practice: Activity where the children can read a word, then write it by identifying how many syllables it contains, then check it.

WORKSHEETS:

  • Two syllable word worksheet: A grid for splitting up words into syllables as an aid to spelling.
  • Blank syllable word worksheet: As above, but the grid is left blank to insert words.

COMPOUND WORDS

POWERPOINT RESOURCES:

Introduction to compound words: Gives an explanation of what compound words are, with three examples shown both as a whole word and split into two. Explains how knowing about compound words can be helpful for spelling. Gives examples of compound words, with opportunities for children to guess what they are. Ends with sentences containing compound words.

  • Introduction to writing compound words: Activity for the children to write and check compound words.
  • Making up compound words: Gives a list of words from which compound words can be made.
  • Words containing box: Examples of words with opportunities to write them.
  • Words containing every: Examples of words with opportunities to write them.
  • Words containing play: Examples of words with opportunities to write them.
  • Words containing up: Examples of words with opportunities to write them.

WORKSHEETS:

  • HF compound word cards: Cards to match up to make compound words. (eg every - body/thing/where)
  • Compound word worksheet: List of individual words for children to select and make new compound words.
  • Compound word worksheet blank: As above, with space to add individual words

TEACHER RESOURCES:

  • Compound word list: A pdf file with lists of alphabetical compound words.
  • Multisyllabic word list: A pdf file with lists of simple 2 and 3 syllable words
